director of photography

Alec Ybarra is an ARRI Alexa Mini owner-operator and Director of Photography specializing in elevated narrative features and arthouse cinema. With a background in high-stakes independent production, Alec has built a reputation for leading crews of union-caliber and industry-veteran teams, with a focus on intentional, character-driven visual palettes.

Most recently, Alec lensed the narrative feature film The Silicant, a production that went to the 2025 Marché du Film (Cannes Film Market) and the American Film Market (AFM) for international distribution. His previous feature work, Charlie, was distributed by Indie Rights and currently streaming on major platforms. Alec’s short-form work has earned critical recognition, including a Film Shortage Daily Pick Premiere for The Place Where Souls Leap Into Eternity.

Technically, Alec is noted for his proficiency in the 4:3 aspect ratio and his commitment to an understated, textural, and meditative aesthetic. His approach prioritizes the sensory experience of the frame, moving away from conventional digital sharpness in favor of an elevated, minimalist, quiet visual language. Whether on location in the mountains of Peru or on a narrative set in Los Angeles, Alec delivers a professional, vendor-standard workflow that bridges the gap between independent spirit and market-ready execution.
